A fuller picture of diversity in the civil service
The Institute for Government has published a blog exploring recent trends on diversity in the civil service.
It provides clarification and further detail on a number of claims the Labour Party made in a speech and comment piece last week.
Labour said that official figures show the number of women in the senior civil service had fallen by 9% between 2010 and 2013. The Institute points out that this drop actually comes amidst a 10% cut in the number of all senior employees. The proportion of employees who are women actually rose from 34% to 36% in the same period.
The party made a similar claim about the number of ethnic minority staff, this time across the civil service as a whole. The number has fallen by 10% since 2010, but the proportion has risen slightly from 9.2% to 9.6%.
