Dear Jonathan Gullis MP: Please don’t repeat unreliable 100,000 migrant claim

In the last few months, we’ve seen several Conservative MPs repeat the claim—based on an unreliable calculation—that Labour would seek an agreement with the EU that would involve taking “100,000 migrants” a year. Most appear to have stopped repeating the claim after we contacted them, but Deputy Chair Jonathan Gullis MP has continued to repeat the claim time and time again.

On 4 October 2023 the Prime Minister claimed that Labour’s immigration plan is to “cook up” a deal with the EU which he said "Could see us accepting around 100,000 of Europe’s asylum seekers". We have already informed Rishi Sunak that the 100,000 figure was unreliable when he made a similar claim in September 2023.

Dear Suella Braverman MP: Please correct your statement about the asylum backlog

On 5 June 2023 in her role as Home Secretary, Suella Braverman MP claimed in Parliament that “the asylum initial decision backlog is down by 17,000”. This was not correct in terms of the total number of asylum cases awaiting an initial decision. The claim remains uncorrected.

Dear Rt Hon Ed Davey MP: Please correct your statement about overseas aid

On 19 March 2023, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey claimed that they are “the only party” committed to restoring the target of spending 0.7% of the UK’s Gross National Income on overseas aid. This is incorrect.

Dear Prime Minister: Please correct your statement about Labour Party funding

On 1 February 2023 the Prime Minister told the House of Commons that the Labour Party and Sir Keir Starmer are being “bankrolled” by the protest group Just Stop Oil. We can find no evidence that this is true. Just Stop Oil has also stated they “do not bankroll Labour”.
